Message from Dr. Joanne Ogunah
The Department of Physical Sciences is one of the departments in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences. The Department offers several undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The undergraduate programs include Bachelor of Science in Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Physics and Bachelor of Science. The postgraduate programs are Master of Science in Chemistry, Master of Science in Physics, Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry, PhD in Chemistry and PhD in Physics.
The Department is committed to promoting excellence in education and research. To achieve this, the department has attracted qualified and dedicated faculty in areas of Renewable energy, Material Science, Natural Products Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. The faculty boasts of expertise from synthetic organic chemistry to computational chemistry, from surface science to separations science, from environmental chemistry to materials design and fabrication. Moreover, the Department boasts of adequately equipped laboratories with skilled and dedicated staff.
Through a practical based approach to learning, we ensure the students acquire hands-on experience which is relevant to their fields. As such, we produce high-achieving graduates who are proficient in modern laboratory and industrial procedures, disciplined and morally upright who excel in leading scientific inquiry process and have broad knowledge in the Chemistry and Physics major thematic areas.
Further, we cultivate an environment that rewards innovation, determination and old-fashioned hard work. In this regard, the Department enrolls outstanding undergraduate students on MSc. scholarship from the University. This initiative promotes competitive academic excellence besides aiding in capacity building.
Besides classroom exposure, the Department has a vibrant chemistry club where students are given the opportunity to have fun with chemistry, carry out research projects, and meet experts in their thematic areas while achieving academic excellence.
